Friends Use of Drugs

The “Friends Use of Drugs” measure prompts participants to estimate how many of their best friends have used alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs in the last 12 months.

This measure is from the Communities That Care® Youth Survey, which assesses the incidence and prevalence of substance use, delinquency, and related problem behaviors. It also measures the risk and protective factors that predict substance use, delinquency, and problem behaviors in communities.

Sample item: “Think of your four best friends (the friends you feel closest to). In the past year (12 months), how many of your best friends have tried beer, wine, or hard liquor (for example, vodka, whiskey or gin) when their parents didn’t know about it?”

Number of items: 4
