Prevention through Alternative Learning Styles (PALS) is a school-based prevention program for middle school students. Teachers or PALS staff members lead students through five units, presented in ten lessons, which cover the following topics: learning styles and differences, effects of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs on the brain and body, peer pressure, and healthy choices. A supplemental website provides additional lessons and a peer mentoring program with interaction games and presentations. The overall goals are (1) reducing intentions to use substances, (2) increasing students’ use of refusal skills, and (3) enhancing students’ knowledge of the effects of ATOD, peer pressure and healthy decision-making, and different learning styles.
Healthy Workplace
Healthy workplace is a workplace-based substance abuse prevention program designed for adults who are not substance-dependent. Small group sessions with video and print materials cover topics such as unsafe drinking, illegal drug use, prescription drug use, and healthy lifestyle practices. The overall goal is for employees to increase healthy lifestyle behaviors while reducing or eliminating substance use.
Lions Quest Skills for Adolescence
Lions Quest Skills for Adolescence is a school-based life skills education program for youth ages 10 to 14. Educators, community members, and parents are engaged to help youth develop skills in five areas: (1) essential social/emotional competencies, (2) good citizenship skills, (3) strong positive character, (4) skills and attitudes consistent with a drug-free lifestyle and (5) an ethic of service to others within a caring and consistent environment. Lions Quest SFA includes a series of 80 45-minute sessions. The overall goal is to help young people develop positive commitments to their families, schools, peers, and communities, and to encourage healthy, drug-free lives.
All Stars
All Stars is a school-based prevention program for middle school students. Teachers lead a series of 13 interactive weekly sessions that focus on five topics: (1) developing positive ideals; (2) creating a belief in conventional norms; (3) building strong personal commitments to avoid high-risk behaviors; (4) bonding with school, prosocial institutions, and family; and (5) increasing positive parental attentiveness. The overall goal is to prevent and delay the onset of high-risk behaviors such as drug use, violence, and premature sexual activity.
Building Assets – Reducing Risks (BARR)
Building Assets—Reducing Risks (BARR) is a school-based prevention program for 9th-grade youth. Teachers lead a series of 33, 30-minute group activities that aim to build social competency, increase student engagement, and prevent substance use. The program is bolstered by strengths-based support interventions for high-risk youth and parent involvement. The overall goal is to decrease the incidence of substance use, academic failure, truancy, and disciplinary incidents among 9th-grade youth.
